It looked as if, at last, we were to have a wedding with no wet weather precautions needed and the sun was shining as Western Marquees drove up the drive.

They had been in the past but had not set up their wedding marquee on the lower lawn

before. Having completed the erection of their beautiful pole tent, they asked if they could put fairy lights round the gazebo so that the guests could use it at night - a definite yes!

Tables were put in place but were not laid until following day when friends and relations arrive to help.

Lovely little touches for the wellbeing of the guests sprung up round the edges of the marquee - flipflops for those in uncomfortable shoes, hankies to mop up any tears, rugs to keep warm in the evening and umbrellas in case it rained and a huge array of old-fashioned sweets.

Vintage china cups were stacked ready for cups of tea or coffee and on another table photographs of the couple were arranged along with a book for wishes of good luck.

Early on the Wedding Day, Pamplemousse Flowers from Shaftesbury came laden with the most beautiful arrangements. Huge ones for the wedding area and smaller ones for the tables.

Soon it was all go. The groom arrived with his groomsmen and they quickly got to work moving the chairs from the marquee to the chosen place for the wedding ceremony by the gate to the HaHa.

The Copper Still Bar set up their barrels in one corner of the marquee and a family friend came to arrange her beautiful wedding cake.

Finally, the owners of Little Pickle at the Mill drove up with their van filled with baskets and hampers ready to fill with homemade goodies. These fed four people and were scattered down the tables and having helped to fill them, I know that there was enough twice that many!

With the chairs in place, the flowers moved to their place of honour and a ribbon decoration hung on the gate it was time for the groom to go into the house to see the Registrars.

Guests were greeted by some hauntingly beautiful music drifting over the lawns played by Hollie Chapman, a very talented violinist.

The bride arrived with her father looking really beautiful in an off the shoulder wedding dress with a draped top and flowing skirt. Her two adult bridesmaids also had draped dresses but in an antique rose colour which suited them both perfectly. They all posed on the front steps before going in to see the Registrars.

As the guests were assembled on the lawn in front of the windows, the shutters were drawn until everyone was ready to leave. The bride could not resist having a peep!

As the bridal party started down the steps, Hollie Chapman began to play.

The couple took their vows in front of the friends and relations and with the wonderful view of the Dorset hills behind them just as they had always planned.

With the ceremony over the couple returned to the house for a few photographs on the stairs.

Meanwhile the bridesmaids and groomsmen gathered the guests in two lines ready to cover them with confetti. as they came out of the dining room windows.

Having recovered from their confetti shower, the bride and groom circulated amongst their guests as they enjoyed their welcome drinks and canapes.

Soon it was time to formally enter the marquee as a married couple and discover their wonderful hampers

And then time for the speeches which were very well received.

Their meal was made even more enjoyable by the wonderful vocals of Meghan Rae who judged the mood of the guests beautifully, singing a marvellous selection of songs. She made a Reel of the time she spent here which you will find at the end of blog.

The speeches finished the bride and groom had a few informal photographs taken with the bridesmaids and groomsmen before drifting onto the main lawn to have a few more - I say dritfted as the bride looked as if she was floating with her dress billowing out around her.

The bride and groom went on to have more pictures taken in the gardens and to discover their wedding night bell tent with which they seem very pleased!

Meanwhile their guests were discovering the lawn games and playing them with gusto,

With the guests happily engaged, the bridal party went to have some fun with a bottle of Prosecco.

The light began to fade and our fairy lights began to light but it was still warm enough for guests to chat on the lawns.

Time to cut the cake and have their first dance.

Iggy Wedding DJ had set up his disco by the dance floor and the music continued until midnight with the dance floor full all evening. The Bride set the tone in her on trend sun glasses!

However, in the field behind the gazebo, Spitting Pig Dorset had set up their Barbeque, and when they were not dancing guests made their way to fill their plates with delicious roast pork and salads.

New Forest Bell Tents had put up a little village of bell tents which had been joined by some private ones and at midnight those guests who were camping followed the fairy lights to the beds, for those who were staying in a B&B a fleet of taxis arrived. It was the end of a fantastic day!

But not the end of the Wedding Celebrations! The Spitting Pig had returned to serve a post Wedding Breakfast. Luckily there was a gazebo set up by the marquee as the rain poured down as the cooks got to work.

Afterwards, many hands made clearing up light work and sadly it was soon time to say goodbye.

Throw Away Wedding! But a Wedding with Wings!

The bride at this wedding was determined that she would be able to clear up by midday on Sunday to enable her to get off on honeymoon the following day! To this end there were very few decorations and extras. This only emphasised the beauty of the new canvas marquee put up by Sean from Affordable Marquees.

Sean arrived on the Wednesday as he likes to take two days to put up the marquee. This time he also put up two small gazebos on the lower lawn to give guests shelter from the sun during the ceremony.

Friday brought the Bride and Groom with friends and relations to set up the few things that they had planned. Tables were covered with throw-away table cloths but not laid as food would be served with bamboo cutlery. Guests would be free to sit where they wished. Very different but very sensible!

A selection of sweets were laid out on one table and a place for memories and good wishes on another. One one side of the top table a beautiful silk cherry tree appeared, below which on the following day, the wedding cake would take its place of honour.

The Wiltshire Mobile Bar company drove into the field, settling their Horsebox hog roast under the big oak tree. They were going to join the campers over night so that they could wake at 2.30 to set the pig roasting!

They were also providing the bar which was brought into the marquee in sections and erected in one corner

Chairs were set out on the lower lawn under the shade of the awnings. Silk flowers were draped round the gazebo and jam jars placed down the aisle ready for confetti the following day. All was ready!

The sun was shining as the Groom and his Groomsmen arrived to put all the last minute arrangements in place - it was going to be a glorious day. The groomsmen were dressed in amazing purple suits with orange ties.

Their tasks completed the groom and his best man took up their position by the gazebo.

Soon the bride’s car was seen coming up the drive. The door opened and panic!! One of the fastenings on the back of her dress was caught on the seat material! Luckily she was able to free herself after a few nerve wracking minutes!

She looked so beautiful with flowing hair and a sheath dress of white lace with a V-cut bodice and a long fishtail train which pooled behind her.

Her bridemaids, also dressed in purple and orange, were waiting for her with flowers and WINGS!
The bride was called Fay by her groom - Celtic for Fairy. The orange and purple colour scheme fell into place.

Wings firmly attached, it was time to go past the ancestors, into the house to see the Registrars.

Official questions asked, there was time for a few more photographs before making her way to her delighted groom.

The service proceeded as usual until it was time for the rings when the couple’s two sons and not the best man, produced them.

Wings were shed and formal group photographs of family, close friends, bridesmaids and groomsmen.afterwards while guests socialised on the lawns.

Soon it was time to enter the marquee to await their delicious hog roast and to listen to the wedding speeches.

It was very much a child centred wedding as the couple have four children between them and the children had a craft table set up for them and Space Hoppers to play with as well entertaining themselves!

While guests also took to the floor, the Bride crept away to magically change into another dress before rejoining her friends wearing a full skirted style with beautiful lace detail.

After about an hour their kit was hijacked by the groom and his friends!

As the band played the guests tried their hands at the games laid out for them.

As the light faded, the bride and groom were taken off to have some more informal pictures taken in the grounds, making their way through the camping area to look at their wedding night bell tent.

Fish and Chips from our local van, the Pilgrim Fryer, soon followed their return and then they danced the night away until falling into their beds soon after midnight.

Beautiful Naval Wedding - a wonderful mix of formal and relaxed

This looked as if it was going to be our first forecast dry wedding of the year and the sun was shining when Oakleaf Marquees arrived to put up their tipis on the main lawn.

Friday brought friends and relations to finish off the decorating the couple had started the day before.

The Table theme was Festival and the table names were Festival Stage Names. A friend of the bride and groom had made a poster showing guests which table they were on.

The bride used silk flowers, feathers and eucalyptus for her decorations with just a few real flowers added. The napkins were beautifully folded to enclose a sprig of lavender and then wrapped in garden twine.

A post box was put ready for cards and good wishes and pairs of the increasingly popular heart shaped sun glasses arranged for guests to use - see the wonderful pictures of the bride and her bridesmaids later in the blog!

Outside a crisp wall was put ready for arriving guests and a pallet notice board showing guests where to go.

To the side of the Tepee a “Coffee/tea cart was pulled into place - hired from the family run Pops’ Props - to be filled with our vintage china and an urn the following day.

A load of haybales for guests to relax on were delivered - also provided by Pop’s Props

Tall silver vases, belonging to the Bride, were filled with real white roses and gysophila by the groom’s sister ready to be put out down the aisle the following day, along with the stacked chairs.

Rolling Bars from Bournemouth turned up to set up their bar and Burbs Kitchen very speedily put up a black tent in the field to house their kitchen. Wayne asked if he could spend the night in the tent as he had to start the Pork cooking early in the morning -

The wedding day arrived - the bride had, very efficiently, allotted tasks for the morning and most of these were achieved! All the silver pots of flowers were placed down the aisle plus two arrangements of white feathers.

The bride’s stepmother arrived with the most beautiful tiered, perfectly iced, wedding cake that she had made herself. Very plain but very chic.

Some of the bride’s naval friends arrived quite early and had a quick practise at creating a sword arch.

With the groom having been in to see the Registrars, we were ready for the arrival of the bride.

She looked absolutely beautiful in an off the shoulder lace dress with a wide lace frill across her shoulders. Her long hair was loose and unadorned although her bridesmaids added a simple white veil for the ceremony. When she lifted her dress, the smartest of shoes peeped out.

Her four adult bridesmaids were dressed in dresses of burnt orange in a similar style to the bride and looked lovely.

Having seen the registrars, the bridal party gathered by the Catalpa Tree before making their way past the formal line of Naval personnel, to the gazebo where a nervous bridegroom awaited them.

The Ceremony had two readings during the ceremony one of whom was also witnessed the signing of the register.

Guests were asked to line up to throw their confetti at the newlyweds as they came back down the aisle. First, however, they had to go under the arch of swords made by the bride’s fellow Naval Officers. Not totally straightforward as they were stopped before the end with a lowered sword and a request for the couple to kiss! The confetti turned into bubbles by the end of the line to the delight of the bride!

After a few informal photographs, the couple joined their guest on the upper lawn where Pimms was being served by the waitressing staff from Event Temps - / 07540398644 / eventtemps.co.uk / info@eventtemps.co.uk

A few more informal shots were taken with their bridesmaids and groomsmen before they were whisked away to the gardens for photographs on their own before making their grand entrance into the marquee as a married couple.

A delicious wedding breakfast was served by Burb’s Kitchen, a family run company from Bournemouth - not an easy task for the waitresses who had to negotiate several steep steps to get to the tipi.

Speeches followed and then as the light began to fade, the bride and groom went off to have some even more informal photographs - beautiful shoes cast aside - which really captured the feel of the day.

Before the evening meal - a delicous Hog Roast, again produced by Wayne from Burb’s Kitchen - the navy officers changed from their Number One into Number Twos Mess Dress.

While the guests were exploring the grounds or chatting on the lawns, the band, Kickback, had set up their equipment in the tipi and soon it was time to cut the cake before taking to the floor for the first dance.

What does a drop of rain matter! A truly wonderful wedding!

The sun was shining and the sky an amazing blue when John from Marqco Marquees arrived to put up a village of Capri tents for the wedding in the field and another in front of the Gazebo in case of bad weather for the wedding ceremony - impossible to predict this year.

Capri tents are quick to put in place and under the watchful gaze of our wire rooks, they were soon up and ready to be filled with decorations etc for the next day

Friday saw friends and relations turning up to help with the decorating and arranging of tables, lawn games etc. The children laid out a huge train track ready for Saturday.

A Crisp wall and a memories table was set up in the marquee, along with a basket of shawls to keep guests warm the following evening.

Wedding flowers, from Black Shed Flowers, were arranged in informal milk churns and metal buckets. Even the bride’s bicycle basket and Wellie Boots were adorned! Jam jars filled with white flowers were set ready to place on logs down the Wedding “Aisle” . Many were stored in the porch of the house over night to keep them cool,

Tables were laid. Long hessian runners went down the centre, covered in the most beautiful strings of eucalyptus leaves and roses. Jars of mixed flowers were dotted in between.

The final touches were bottles of Pickering’s Gin! The Bride’s maiden name was Pickering. Tables were named after local Iron-age hillforts as the groom is an archeologist. Luggage labels showed each guest their place. The Bride’s place was indicated by an apron with “Wifey” beautifully embroidered on the front, that she had made on her hen party, ready to wear for the meal.

Time to go home.

Saturday and sadly the weather that had been so lovely was forecast to rain. The groom and his friends arrived to put out the many notices that had been sheltering in the marquee and to put the vases of white flowers in their place on the aisle. A quck check and everything was perfect.

Cheese from The West Country Cheese Company arrived and was stacked to form a most beautiful wedding cake. Once in its place of honour, little replicas of the couple’s dogs sat on one side with pictures of the bride and groom as children.

Time to get ready and for the groom to wrestle with his buttonhole before going into the house to see the Wedding Registrars..

We just managed to get a carpet laid out at the bottom of the front steps before the first guests began to arrive. - a mixture of rain and spilt flower water threatened to spoil the bride’s dress.

Soon the bridal car was spotted coming up the drive before stopping in front of the house. The Bride looked so beautiful in a simple sheath wedding dress with a long lace trimmed train. It suited her perfectly. Her hair was decorated with little sprigs of gypsophila.

She was greeted, as her father helped out of the car, by a very special group of old school friends. If you look carefully you will see a glimpse of her very sensible personalised footwear!

The bride made her way into the dining room to see the Registrars, passing the ancestor on her way. The formalities did not take long and the bridal party was soon posing for photographs before making their way to the Gazebo and the nervous bridegroom.

Miraculously, the rain continued to hold off and the Wedding Ceremony was able to go ahead outside. It was a very personal service with a lovely reading followed by an amazing performance by the groom's sister and nieces His sister had written a poem about their marriage and love and compared it to baking a cake which they proceeded to do!

The fun did not stop there! Vows said, there was a scurrying in the aisle and the couple’s collie, RINGo, burst out bearing the rings.

Having signed the register the couple slowly made their way back to the house, pausing on the way to have photographs taken with their dog, who was soon joined by its younger companion Rocket

Into the house again to catch their breath before facing a barrage of confetti on the lawn. Luckily rain had been foreseen and the bride was protected by a lacy umbrella.

Chairs were hurriedly moved back to the marquee before the forecast really rain set in.

For a while the guests were able to enjoy their pimms and cannapes on the lawn, serenaded by the music of Steve and his folk band but soon they had to make a dash for the marquee where the band soon set up again and continued to play. With everyone sheltering in the marquee, and the band playing, there was a wonderful cosy, family atmosphere, there was even an art table set out for restless children.

Time for the bride and groom to stop having their rather damp photographs taken and to make their grand entrance - and what an entrance - to the applause of their guests.

Everyone tucked into their Wedding Breakfast of delicious pies prepared Mesa Catering before starting the wedding speeches which seemed to a cause great amount of hilarity.

With great timing, the rain stopped after the speeches and guests could spill out onto the lawn for a group photograph before the bride and groom were taken off for some informal shots in the grounds.

The light in the field was too good an opportunity to miss but after having a few photographs taken they returned to the marquee to cut their “cheese” wedding cake and perform their first dance with aplomb.

It turned into a really lovely evening and guests made up for lost time, chatting in the huge deckchairs, trying out the lawn games and exploring the memories laid out in the marquee.

But as darkness fell, everyone returned to the marquee to dance the night away to the sound of Ed and The Indie Heads - eddrumsuk@hotmail.com - who kept the dance floor full to the end. The Horse Box Bar provided by Vintage Tipple Trailer from Sturminster Newton, also kept up a busy trade!

Midnight brought the call to retire to tents or B&Bs. Some had succumbed to sleep a little earlier than others, exhausted by the celebrations.

The party continued the following day with close friends gathering to help tidy up and share a picnic in the field. It had been a truly wonderful weekend.

A WET WEDDING IS A SIGN OF GOOD LUCK!

They say that a wet wedding is a sign of good luck as tying a wet knot forms a much stronger bond. This marriage will be extremely strong as it deluged most of the day!

Friday, when Coastal Tents arrived to put up their Tipi in the field, was dark and gloomy but the forecast for better weather later in the day proved true.  The huge lengths of wood were quickly heaved into place and by mid afternoon the tipis were up but with finishing touches still to put in place

The couple had headed warnings about possible rain, however, and John from Marcqo Marquees, with 24hours notice agreed to put a Capri tent in front of the dining room doors in case they could not hold their ceremony by the gazebo.

Up in the camping ground, New Forest Bell tents was putting up a Bell Tent City.  These were added to by many private  tents of every size, shape and colour.

The day brought many friends and relations to help set up and decorate. Flowers appeared in great big buckets from Rachel Land at Love Rachel Floristry - loverachelfloristry@gmail.com - and the Capri tent became the headquarters for all things artistic from flower arranging to sign writing.

As Coastal tents put the final touches to the tipis, tables were set out and table laying began.  (china and cuttlery from Wessex Cater Hire - https://wessexcaterhire.co.uk/ ) Eucalyptus and lavender went down the centre of each table, (flowers to be added the following day) with handwritten menus scattered amongst them.

Each plate sat on a mat hand printed with lavender and was topped with a white napkin, knife and fork a sprig of lavender and a curl of rustic string.  Very simple and very effective. Glasses went  on a small hessian mat overlaid with another printed with wild flowers.  Table numbers decorated with more wild flowers were the finishing touches.

Pale yellow and green ribbons were tied to each bench and in the catalpa tree, perfectly complimenting the green of the leaves.


With the possibility of rain, the next day, some of the helpers put up a gazebo to cover the cooking arrangements as they had no catering tent - much changing of plans!

With their vases of gypsophila stored for safety on the dining room table, everything was finished just in time for a huge paella supper. This was being cooked by great family friend on a huge paella in the camping area. The bride and groom were joined by the campers and those staying close by.  It was a lovely evening and there were still high hopes that they would still manage to marry outside by the gazebo.

After a good night’s sleep, the campers woke to the smell of bacon, as the same noble friend cooked breakfast for everyone.  By 9.30 the weather was still holding BUT the forecast from 10.00 was dreadful.  The decision was taken to move the chairs from the tipis to the capri tent on the lawn.  From there it would be quicker to set them up by the gazebo and if the rain came in they were all set to hold the ceremony on the dining room steps.

Sadly, this proved the case and all those helping that morning too k the view that this would happen.  Chairs were arranged, flowers were moved from the dining room to the aisle, bunting and wicker hearts were hung round the inside of the tent.

By the time the groom arrived with his friends, the stage was set, and although sad that their dream of holding an outside wedding was shattered, he was very happy with everything that had been prepared.

Whilst all this work was going on, the workers were serenaded by the most amazing cello music.  A Hungarian friend of the groom was practising the music he would play during the ceremony.  We originally thought he could play in the dining room until we realised, he would block the entrance!  Wires were moved and he was established in the tent instead.

Time for everyone to change and get ready for the guests and registrars.  The latter were unaware of the change of plans but ever resourceful they took it all in their stride.

Buttonholes in place, the cellist starting to play, the guests began to arrive.

The ancestors were ready in the porch to greet the bride as she arrived in a white Morris Minor with her Man of Honour. She looked amazing in a close fitting lace gown with cap sleeeves. Her hair was twisted back and held with a simple bunch of gypsophila. Her adult bridesmaids wore dresses chosen by themselves but in matching shades of sea green. Her small attendants were in white organza dresses with white cardigans to keep them warm.

With brollies to protect her she made her way into the house to see the registrars. Before going to meet her groom, she had photographs taken with her bridemaids etc.

As she was seeing them in the dining room, the curtains were closed to prevent the groom and guests from catching a glimpse of her dress before she came down the aisle. The groom and his groomsmen waited outside for the signal that the bridal party was on its way. Miraculously, there was no need for umbrellas.

The look that passed between the two of them - a look of great friendship as well as love was obvious throughout the day despite the rain.

The wisteria over the dining room door framed their wedding as well as keeping them out of the rain. Their guests, dry under their Capri Marquee had a perfect view of the proceedings.

Ceremony over, the couple made their way back through the gathering of friends and relations to be pelted with confetti and cheers.

Then while a few photographs were taken by the Catalpa Tree, it was all hands on deck to remove the chairs back to the tipis.

With the bar in place, guests made themselves comfortable in the tipis, while the bridal party had more photographs taken - some formal, some not so formal.

Taking advantage of there only being a light drizzle, the bride and groom made their way to the walled garden for some final photographs

Snug and dry in the Tipis, the guests chatted and ate until it was time for cake and speeches. The latter were full of emotion, thanks and happiness. A few brave souls played with the lawn games set up in the field!

As the sun went down, the band, a group of their couple’s friends set up ready for the evening’s entertainment. The bride crept away and reappeared in a silve cat suit ready for the first dance.

All good things come to an end and at midnight the music stopped and guests wound their way to their tents and taxis. Then end of an incredible day - if anything the rain had brought an increased closeness to an already close and very happy gathering
